Carlyle’s & Sloane’s Engagement Party

Happy Monday morning!

I hope everyone had a blessed and wonderful Easter weekend!  We sure did.  We spent Friday and Saturday getting ready for an engagement party we helped host for Wheat’s brother Carlyle and his fiancé Sloane.  They’re getting married next month, and a group of Carlyle’s friends got together and threw a little party for them.  The weather was pretty dicey all weekend, but luckily the rain/mist stopped for the party.  It wasn’t gorgeous weather, but it wasn’t raining and all was well.  Thank goodness!

The happy couple:

We did a simple chalkboard theme (plus Easter candy and springtime pastels) for the party, and naturally I had to DIY some fun things.

I spray painted thick kraft paper with chalkboard paint, then cut out the large bunting as well as the cake topper bunting.  I sewed the ribbon onto the paper for the large bunting with my sewing machine with a contrasting off-white thread, and just sewed right through the smaller triangles to make this DIY chalkboard bunting cake topper.  Super easy, but I loved the way they turned out!

I used rubber bands on wooden skewers to keep the bunting in place for the cake topper… Does anyone else have any clever solutions for this?

The ampersand is actually a pewter charm that I hand-stamped with their wedding date.

Speaking of their wedding date, I have an epic blogger fail for you. Crystal had this adorable idea for me to put on the couple’s first date, engagement date, and wedding date on our DIY chalkboard easel for the party. I spent entirely too much time Wednesday night trying to make my 10-year old boy handwriting look nice, and I didn’t even notice my flub until someone pointed it out halfway through the party…

Yup.  That’s supposed to be 2014.  They are not about to celebrate their one year anniversary…. I’m human, y’all.

Unfortunately for Harold, I got his spring/summer hair cut done on Thursday, just before this abnormally frigid and wet spring weather.  He was freezing, so this is what he ended up wearing to the party:

Ridiculous, I am well aware.

The cake itself is the strawberry little layer cake that was recently featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  It’s a vanilla cake with strawberry cream cheese swiss meringue buttercream icing.  Say that ten times fast!

It was delicious, apparently, because there was not one single piece left.  :)

We had lemonade, sweet tea, and water, as well as a fire pit full of beer.  Little did we know, we would have preferred a fire later on.  It was the coldest and dreariest Easter weekend in my memory!

And lots of delicious food!  Wheat and a few of the guys smoked the boston butts on my dad’s huge smoker we borrowed, and he did SUCH a good job.  The BBQ was so good!  We also had a plethora of spring-time sides made by the other two ladies who helped host and myself.  Deviled eggs, baked beans, broccoli salad, cole slaw, and spicy corn salad.  They all went over well!

The tables were decked out with black table cloths, Refinery candles, and some springtime flowers, including some hot pink knock-out roses from our yard.

Crystal and I aren’t professional flower arrangers, by any means, but we thought they turned out pretty decently!  They were colorful and cheerful in contrast with the dreary day, so they did their job.

Everyone had a great time!  I managed to snap a few pictures in the midst of it all, but of course, not as many as I wish I had.

When it came time to cut the cake, we thought we would let them get a little practice round in. ;)

It was trying at times…

But they quickly got the hang of it.  I think they’re safe for next month now!
