The Fruit of the Spirit’s not a… WATERMELON!  Anyone remember that song from Church camp?  This is one of my favorite shirts ever… it brought back the words to that song, as well as serving as a reminder to me of these virtues that I strive to embody.  Key word being strive.  And these tee’s are back in stock (in a new, even prettier color) at Maiden South!

As far as jewelry goes, y’all know I’m obsessed.  I always have been.  So when RocksBox approached me and asked if I’d like to give them a shot, I jumped at the chance.

Basically, RocksBox is a subscription service.  You pay $19 a month, pick out a wishlist from their extensive collection of designer jewelry, and they ship 3 pieces to you: 1 from your wishlist, and two more they think you’ll like.  You can purchase these pieces at a discount, but if you don’t want to, no biggie.  Just ship them back and they’ll send you 3 more pieces… as often as you’d like!  It’s so much fun, and as someone who loves receiving packages in the mail (just ask my husband… or our UPS man…) this little box of sparkly surprises is a day-maker for sure.

The best part?  They’re going to give you a month free!  Just use discount code oystersandpearlsxoxo to receive your free month when you sign up for Rocksbox.

Pictured above is the Gorjana Taner Toggle Lariat necklace (the first item from my wishlist).  It was the perfect simple layering necklace.  I wore it constantly while I had it!

Below are the two pieces Rocksbox picked out for me:  the Perry Street Sophia bracelet and the Perry Street Stella earrings, which reminded me of fireflies.  I never would have picked these out for myself, but I ended up absolutely loving them!

It’s a little instant gratification without a hint of guilt… who couldn’t use a little bit of that?

Thomasville Companies in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards

Martha Stewart American Made Awards

Directly from the website:

American Made spotlights the maker, supports the local, and celebrates the handmade. The program is made up of people and communities that have turned their passion for quality craftsmanship and well-designed goods into a way of life.

For more than 20 years, Martha Stewart has celebrated this spirit of innovation in the pages of her magazines and on her television shows. Now, through American Made, Martha Stewart and the editors of Martha Stewart Living are spotlighting the next generation of great American makers: entrepreneurs, artisans, and small-business owners who are creating beautiful, inspiring, useful products; pioneering new industries; improving local communities; and changing the way we eat, shop, work, and live.

We believe we are in the midst of a shift in our culture where creative entrepreneurs are defining a new American economy. From Detroit to Des Moines, Spokane to St. Louis, people are choosing Main Street over mini-malls—supporting the local and the handmade. Our country’s makers are sparking this change by taking a leap, banking on their creativity and craftsmanship, and living their version of the American dream.

This is where you will meet, learn from, and be inspired by fellow makers from around the country. Welcome.

That sums it up nicely, and y’all know how I feel about American-made items.  I’m opening up an entire store based on that very affection.  But there are three awesome companies based right up the road (a road I travel many times per week) in our own Thomasville, Georgia that are in the running to win the Martha Stewart American Made Awards!  I thought I would do a little spotlight on them and encourage you all to go vote for them!  Let’s help SoWeGa gain a little national recognition from my home girl.

Dreaming Cow Creamery

Dreaming Cow Creamery Cows | Oysters & Pearls

Dreaming Cow Creamery‘s offices are located in Thomasville, but the gals (cows) are located on their farm in Pavo.  A sister company of famed Sweet Grass Dairy, Dreaming Cow Creamery makes New Zealand-style full fat yogurt that is out. of. this. world.  Wheat and I are obsessed with their yogurt and have been since I lived in Tallahassee.  It’s the bomb.com and my personal favorite-of-all-time yogurt.  Their cows are grass-fed year-round, and in the heat of the South Georgia summer spend their time under irrigation pivots.  They lead happy, happy lives, which much be why their yogurt tastes so darn good.

Blackberry Patch

Blackberry Patch Pepper Jelly | Oysters & Pearls

I’ve mentioned Blackberry Patch here before – they were at Due South’s Makers Market.  And they’re stuff is the jam.  (I know y’all love my puns…?)  Founded in 1988, Blackberry Patch makes all manner of fruity jarred goodness, including syrups, jams, jellies, and even salsas, using real fruits and family recipes.  They give back to the community, too!  Each year, a portion of the profits from Blackberry Patch goes to support four charities: Marion Medical Missions, providing clean water in developing nations; The Gideons, bringing the Word of God to millions each year, Habitat for Humanity, providing sustainable housing around the globe.

Schermer Pecans

You’ve seen Schermer Pecans here on O&P before, too – they sponsored the 2014 Southern C Summit!  A family-owned for 65 years and true Southwest Georgia-wide operation, Schermer Pecans‘ trees are just outside of Albany, Georgia, and their offices are in Thomasville.  Not just plain ole pecans, Schermer Pecans has candied pecans and tons of gift options, too.  Plus, y’all know I am a fan of anyone who is a fan of my beloved spaniels.

Marquin Campbell Designs Turkey Spur Jewelry Giveaway

Happy Friday!  What better way to celebrate is there than with jewelry?

I met Marquin Campbell a year or so ago through a co-worker.  She lives in Greenville, South Carolina with her husband (the aforementioned co-worker) George and their pups, and creates beautiful, nature-inspired jewelry and paintings while simultaneously running her own business, Vino & van Gogh.

Marquin grew up near Savannah, where she was inspired by the wildlife and the marshes.  She went on to study Drawing and Painting at The University of Georgia, then to study Fashion Design at Parsons, the New School for Design in New York City. While in school Marquin had studied abroad in both Cuba and Italy, further influencing her artistic perspective.

Some of my favorite pieces of her artwork are combinations of her abstract and colorful style combined with scenes from nature:

Her artwork is colorful and fun, as is her jewelry.  But my favorite of all her jewelry is her simple, hand-cast bronze and pewter turkey spur jewelry.  As a matter of fact, she’s sort of famous for them!  The cufflinks will be featured at the Garden & Gun show in Charleston this December, and they are also appearing in the Southern Living Gift Guide!

Marquin sent me a necklace, bracelet and a pair of cufflinks so I could see them for myself.  Any (or all?) of these would make an excellent gift to tuck away until Christmas time.

Marquin Campbell Designs, Turkey Spur Necklace, Turkey Spur Bracelet, and Turkey Spur Cuff Links | Oysters & PearlsThe pairing of the pearls with the turkey spurs is simple, classic sporting style.  And I just love the story behind the turkey spurs.  From Marquin’s website:

These Pewter Turkey Spur Cuff Links were inspired by an afternoon afield in Thomasville, Georgia.  The original spurs came from a magnificent old Tom harvested by Marquin’s husband.

He was so proud of the bird–which he had chased for over two years–that Marquin surprised him with a pair of links made from the spurs, and he wore them every chance he got.  After garnering much praise and clamor from his friends wanting a pair of their own, Marquin had the spurs cast into bronze and pewter, and they have become beloved keepsakes for outdoor enthusiasts across the Southeast.

These designer cufflinks are handmade in Greenville, South Carolina by designer Marquin Campbell with great care, they are uniquely original and fantastic conversation starters – a symbol of the true affection for the Great Outdoors held by every conservationist.

I asked Marquin what she loves about Greenville , the South, and how it inspires her work.

I have been really fortunate to have landed in Greenville.  Its a medium sized town that still has retained its small town traits.  The city LOVES artists and because I have surrounded myself with the arts through the art school I own, Vino & van Gogh, and utilizing the space as both a store and gallery, living here has been a perfect spot for me to land.  I am so very grateful to live out a creative life.

Isn’t that all we can ask for?

Marquin Campbell Designs, Turkey Spur Necklace | Oysters & Pearls  As absolutely tempting as it was to keep at least one of these goodies to myself (seriously, SO tempting – I gotta get one for myself!) Marquin generously sent them all for me to give away to you guys!
