Wheat and I (and Juin!) were fortunate enough to attend the Ali family’s Annual French Brittany Field Trials yet again this year.  We always have the very best time watching these little bird dogs show off their stuff, and this year was no exception.  It was a GORGEOUS cool (but not cold) day in the woods.  I mostly just have pictures of Juin, but hope to have a few more pictures to share once everyone who was there gets around to sharing them.

We are lucky enough to have multiple amazing photographers in attendance every year, and this year those ranks included none other than Dale Spartas.  He’s a good friend of Dr. Ali, and he quickly becomes a friend to anyone he meets… especially people who love the same things he does: bird dogs and hunting and the outdoors.

Juin went up against Bobby Lee in the first round of the young adult dogs this year.  She’s 1.5 years old now!  Hard to believe how small and young she was at the Field Trials last year.

Ivy is such a pretty girl, and she retrieves, too!  Not all French Brittanys will retrieve, and it’s considered a real bonus if they do.  Her mama, Rhonda, was proud, I know. :)

At lunch time, we headed back to the barn for a feast and awards, but not before I snapped a few more pictures of Wheat and Juin.

We are so happy to participate in these friendly field trials each year, and we have the very best time seeing everyone and watching these little dogs strut their stuff.  It’s all in good fun, but we’re awfully proud that Juin tied Ivy, her half-sis, for second best in the young adult division, and she won Second Best Overall this year!  That little pup brings so much chaos, fur, laughs and love into our little house and we are thrilled that she is such a good little bird dog, too.

Thank you SO much to Galt and Francine Allee, who host this wonderful event each January.  I’ve been coming to the field trials since I was a little girl, and it’s an event I hope to continue to attend for many, many years to come… hopefully with a little boy or girl in tow before too long!

Harold and Juin Eat Apples

Thank you so, so much to everyone who commented on my last post.  The kind, reassuring words from friends and readers I’ve never even met helped assuage the self-doubt I’ve been feeling.  Nevertheless, I think sometimes it’s really great (though painful) to have a true, punched-right-in-the-baby-maker gut check.  Thank you also for all the recommendations and things you’d like to see.  I’ve taken each and every single comment to heart and stored them away for rainier, less happy days.  I also have added some of your suggestions to my reading list.  And by reading, I won’t lie.  Thanks to a recommendation from a friend, I’ve been listening to books via Audible.  I listen during my 1 hour commute, I listen while I walk for exercise… it’s pretty awesome.  Because as much as I love to read, I just don’t have much spare time.  I’m not going to make myself even feel bad about that.

And if for no other reason than I am most likely the most literal person you’ll ever meet (I promise – just ask Wheat)… here are some terrible iPhone pictures of my dogs eating apples.  Complete with some corner of the photo cameos of my ever-lovely crocs.

Commence blog posts regarding whatever the hell I feel like writing about. ;)

Every apple I eat, I give one bite to each of them and then take one myself.  So basically, I never eat more than 1/3 of an apple anymore.  They line up and beg for apples.  And then when they chew them up, they chew really big and crunch really loud and it’s hysterical when you’re working from home and they are the only other “people” you’ve talked out loud to all day.

Enjoy.  And thank you.

2015 French Brittany Field Trials

It’s that time of year again!

Last year, Wheat and I attended the 12th Annual French Brittany Field Trials in Quincy, Florida just to take it all in.  We didn’t have a dog in the fight, so to speak, but it’s magic to watch those pretty little dogs work, so we didn’t mind.

This year (last weekend), our little Juin competed in the Puppy Division!  We are so proud of that little bit.

A bit of background: This field trial began in 2003 when a handful of friends, (namely my dad’s great friend, Galt) got together to have a Puppy Trial.  Every year since, the event has grown as did the circle of friends with French Britts.  Now, there are nearly 30 dogs in the trials, a catered BBQ lunch, trophies, and afternoon hunts. We are so grateful to be included!

This year, we began at 7:45 or so with donuts from Reynolds Donuts in Quincy (some of the best donuts you’ll ever have).

Our Louie competed in the Old Timer’s Division right off the bat.  At 14 and a half, he was the oldest Britt there!  I couldn’t get a good picture of it… but despite his poor eye sight, lack of hearing, and a long-gone sense of smell, Louie did great.  And by great, I mean he walked around for a few minutes, flushed a couple quail by accident, and got carried back to the quail buggy.

Next up were the puppies!  Juin competed against 7 other puppies, and she did so, so well.  We were proud puppy parents!  Prepare to be overwhelmed by pictures of Juin hunting.  And also other dogs hunting.  Having a French Brittany means you are obsessed with all French Brittanys.

Juin also made some new friends. :)

After Juin, we watched all the other dogs give it a go.  I love seeing all the dogs each year!

Juin got called back for another round, and this time I was able to get some much better pictures of her in action.  A French Brittany on point is one of the prettiest things you will see in the woods.

Wheat has been working with Juin so much since we brought her home, and he was awfully proud of how well she did… we both were!

And then I managed to get one picture with my mom before the awards ceremony and lunch.

2015 is off to a great start!  Here’s to hoping the rest of it lives up to January.
