Wheat and I (and Juin!) were fortunate enough to attend the Ali family’s Annual French Brittany Field Trials yet again this year.  We always have the very best time watching these little bird dogs show off their stuff, and this year was no exception.  It was a GORGEOUS cool (but not cold) day in the woods.  I mostly just have pictures of Juin, but hope to have a few more pictures to share once everyone who was there gets around to sharing them.

We are lucky enough to have multiple amazing photographers in attendance every year, and this year those ranks included none other than Dale Spartas.  He’s a good friend of Dr. Ali, and he quickly becomes a friend to anyone he meets… especially people who love the same things he does: bird dogs and hunting and the outdoors.

Juin went up against Bobby Lee in the first round of the young adult dogs this year.  She’s 1.5 years old now!  Hard to believe how small and young she was at the Field Trials last year.

Ivy is such a pretty girl, and she retrieves, too!  Not all French Brittanys will retrieve, and it’s considered a real bonus if they do.  Her mama, Rhonda, was proud, I know. :)

At lunch time, we headed back to the barn for a feast and awards, but not before I snapped a few more pictures of Wheat and Juin.

We are so happy to participate in these friendly field trials each year, and we have the very best time seeing everyone and watching these little dogs strut their stuff.  It’s all in good fun, but we’re awfully proud that Juin tied Ivy, her half-sis, for second best in the young adult division, and she won Second Best Overall this year!  That little pup brings so much chaos, fur, laughs and love into our little house and we are thrilled that she is such a good little bird dog, too.

Thank you SO much to Galt and Francine Allee, who host this wonderful event each January.  I’ve been coming to the field trials since I was a little girl, and it’s an event I hope to continue to attend for many, many years to come… hopefully with a little boy or girl in tow before too long!

Weekend Recap

Good morning!

Please excuse my absence the past week or so.  My father-in-law told me Friday that he knew I must have been busy this week by my lack of posts.  So basically, y’all know when I’m busy, and I apologize!  But sometimes life has a tendency to get in the way of posting/cooking/editing pictures/writing/sitting still.  I have a strong tendency to over-commit myself and end up running myself ragged sometimes.  This week has been one of those times!

This weekend, though, was nice and relaxing.  We spent most of it in Bristol and Blountstown with my parents.  It was my mom’s birthday yesterday (Happy Birthday, Usa Do!!!) so we celebrated that.

Saturday, in the midst of a gorgeous, very warm day, we snuck in one last quail hunt for the season.

Sadie | Oysters & Pearls

Don’t feel too sorry for Sadie there.  Despite the sad look on her face, she got to hunt all day.  She just had to be kept away from the male dogs this time…

Then I propped my weary feet up by the fire (I did actually hunt, despite my lack of selfies).

My dad fried up a bunch of quail, Wheat put some sausage on the grill, and we had an after-hunt feast.

And then we crashed.

Sunday after Church, all four of us loaded back up (plus six dogs) and headed back out to the barn for some Gator riding and longleaf pine cone hunting.  Warning: blurry iPhone pictures ahead.

We found that a neighbor’s chicken has decided the barn is a great place to nest.

Finally, once we all were loaded on the Gator, pine cone hunting commenced.

Sometimes a bit of climbing was necessary.

Begging the question: how many doctors and lawyers does it take to get a pine cone out of a tree? ;)

We also grabbed some cute little sand pine cones.

I cannot over-emphasize what a gorgeous day it was!

The wild plums are blooming, and just days away from a full bloom.  They’re beautiful.

After our collection was complete, we rode by a cemetery that was on the property when my parents purchased it.  I know it’s sort of morbid, but I’ve always loved walking around a cemetery and imagining the people buried there and what their lives may have been like.  This little family cemetery is no exception.

And finally, we had a late-evening celebratory birthday dinner for my sweet Mama at The Whip – where else?

I had a greek salad with seared tuna on top, which was delicious, per usual.

And that about wraps it up!  It was a great weekend, but I think I’m going to start needing weekends to recover from my weekends. ;) I’ll try to be more present this week on O&P, but bear with me!  These are busy times.  In the event I’m missing here, check out my Instagram or Twitter to follow along.  I almost always have the time to snap a few pictures here and there on my phone.

2014 French Brittany Field Trials & Scenes from My Weekend

Happy Monday!

As you may have deduced from my Instagram account (if you’re not following me, you should be!), Wheat and I spent our Saturday morning watching field trials.  The bloodline that my family’s French Brittany Spaniels are from has a field trial each year, and it’s so much fun to see all the different dogs and watch them hunt.  I thought I’d share (quite) a few pictures with y’all this morning!

I managed to get a couple pictures of a couple different quail.  Catching them is difficult, so I was pretty surprised this one turned out fairly decently.Eastern Bobwhite Quail | Oysters & Pearls

The field trials started with the puppy division, which consisted of a single puppy this year: Ivy.  Now Wheat and I both have a serious case of puppy French Britt puppy fever!  But can you blame us?

Ivy, French Brittany Puppy | Oysters & Pearls

Ivy was absolutely precious and was pointing already!

Next up were the old timers.  Our dog, Louie, who turns 14 this summer, was the oldest of the entire group.

He did okay, but he is moving awfully slow these days.  He had to catch a ride back to the Gator.

Then we watched all the other Britts hunt.

After the field trials were over, lunch was waiting on us.

It was awesome.  Wings, smoked onions, sausage, broccoli, baked beans, cole slaw, yeast rolls… I definitely overfilled my plate.

After lunch, most everyone went back out and hunted the rest of the afternoon, but Wheat and I had a birthday party to attend!  Wheat’s grandmother turned 87 on Friday, so we met all Wheat’s dad’s family in Tallahassee for a birthday celebration at Z. Bardhi’s Italian Cuisine.  It was amazing!

Mary Cate and I split a Caprese salad at first, then she liked it so much she ordered her own!

In her defense, it was really good. :)  Then I had a seafood lasagna with goat cheese instead of ricotta.  It was divine!

20140126-210821.jpg

It was also REALLY dark in there!

Sunday I came into possession of a great deal of canning supplies and an old wooden shoe organizing shelf.  I put the two together, and I now have a very clean and organized canning cabinet!

20140126-210948.jpg

It was a complete disaster zone before, so I was really excited to whip it into shape.  Now I wish it didn’t have doors because I could stare at this all day long!

That’s basically what I was up to all weekend.  What were y’all doing?
